Last 6 F1 Drivers to Finish Last - Where are they now?

Updated: May 19, 2020

Formula 1 is one of the most competitive sports around, but someone always has to finish last. Today we take a look at the position of wooden spoon and the last 6 drivers to have finished there and where are they now?

Now we are only taking in account drivers that completed the full season, so any one-off drivers or anyone that may be joined mid-season will not be considered.

Now for this 6 we start off in 2012, because as you will see there is a driver to get repeat entries in this list, and as we are looking at the last 6 drivers not season that will only count as a single entry, bringing us back to the exciting 2012 season.

2012 - Pedro De La Rosa

Now for the 2012 season the wooden spoon was given to Mr Test Driver himself, Pedro De La Rosa. Pedro was driving for the famous HRT and would score 0 points on his way to last place in the last in the standings with a highest finish of 17th on four occasions, remembering back then we had a grid of 24 cars.

So where is he now? Well hes retired from racing! After leaving HRT when they exited F1 at the end of the 2012 season he would spend two years as a Ferrari test driver before becoming the pre season testing driver for the Aguri Formula E team, now techeeta, before retiring from racing in 2016. He is now the technical and sporting advisor for the Techeeta team, whilst he runs his own racing school and junior race team “Drivex” in the Euroformula open championship.

2013 - Max Chilton

Jumping a year to 2013 we have a different driver picking up the unwanted award, this time it was the turn of Max Chilton. He would spend two seasons with Marussia in 2013 and 2014 before leaving F1 at the end of 2013. Chilton would finish with 0 points with his position again being determined by highest finish.

After leaving F1 Chilton would head over the Pond to compete in Indy Lights, finishing 5th in 2015, whilst also entering Le Mans with the failed Nissan LMP1 long boi entry.

Chilton would make the jump to Indy car in 2016 with Chip Ganassi Racing and would spend 2 seasons with the team in 2016 and 2017, finishing 19th and 11th in the championship respectively.

Chilton is currently with Carlin in the Indy series where he has been from 2018 onwards.

2014 - Esteban Gutierrez

Now in 2014 the award would have gone to either Chilton or Kobayashi however, due to Marussia and Caterham withdrawing from the last 3 races of the year, the award goes to Esteban Gutierez. He would again score zero points as was the lowest placed driver to complete the whole season. He was in his second season racing for the Sauber but would be dropped at the end of the year, after a poor season for both driver and team.

He would spend a year at Ferrari in 2015 as a test driver before being signed for the new Haas team for 2016. Unfortunately, he would be dropped again at the end of the season after finishing on zero points again.

In 2017 he would sub in at Techeeta and compete in 7 races in IndyCar for the Dale Coyne racing team. He is currently the test and reserve driver at Mercedes F1 working alongside Stoffel Vandorne. He has been in his current role since signing in 2018.

2015,16,17 - Marcus Erikson

Our next entry will cover the 2015,16 and 17 season as this driver claimed a triple wooden spoon run. This converted award would go to Marcus Erikson, who would achieve this while driving for Sauber. He would finish the 2015 season with 9 points, but would score 0 in both 2016 and 2017, securing his last places.

Ericson would leave Formula 1 after spending one more year at the team in 2018 before making the move to Arrow Schmidt Peterson racing for 2019 whilst also remaining test driver for the Alpha Romeo team after it’s rebrand from Sauber. He is currently with Chip Ganassi racing for the 2020 Indy season.

2018 - Sergei Sirotkin

Now onto our penultimate driver in this six, and the wooden spoon would this time go to Sergei Sirotkin for the 2018 season. He would score one point with Williams on his way to last in the standings and 2018 would prove to be his only season in F1.

Since leaving after the 2018 season he spent 2019 as the test driver for Renault and McLaren and in 2020 he is still without a full time drive as he raced with ART in pre season testing and is yet to announce he will be doing anything else this year.

2019 - Geogre Russell

Now onto the most reason driver, this being George Russell for the 2019 season. He would finish behind team mate Robert Kubica by a single point, although George was the stronger of the two drivers all season. He would score 0 points as Williams would have their worst year in the sport and he is still with Williams for the 2020 season.
