Last 6 F1 Drivers to get Banned

Drivers getting banned in F1 is a rare occurance, but when they do happen they big news, so today I thought we would look back at the last 6 drivers to receive a ban.

Now i’ve included super license suspensions in this list as they are the same thing and happened before the FIA brought in the new penalty points system we currently use.

So starting off our list is the most recent ban in F1, which came in 2012 and was given to Romain Grosjean after he caused the dangerous pile up into the first corner of the 2012 Belgium grand prix. Grosjean was replaced by Jerome D’ambrosio for the following round but returned after sitting out a single event.

Grosjean is 34 and is currently still in F1 with Haas and is well known for being quite error prone as he again came close to a ban at the end of 2018. His current deal at Haas runs out at the end of this season so it will be interesting to see if Haas choose to resign him.

Next on our list is the best f1 driver at all time, Yuji Ide. I’m joking of course. Ide joined the Super Aguri team for 2006, making his debut in F1 at 31 years old. He would go on to be extremely error prone and at times looked like an amateur racer. He caused a crash on the first lap at Imola and then with the FIA’s recommendation, basically sounded like the FIA told the team, Ide was dropped down to the teams reserve driver over safety concerns.

The FIA would then do something very savage, and would suspend Ide’s super license completely, blocking him from ever competing in F1 again.

He is currently racing in Super GT with Elcars Bentley but hes rather slipped under the radar so it was hard to find out much more.

Moving on we go back to 1997, however we aren't talking about Michael Schumacher's exclusion from the championship, we are however talking about his championship rival that season, Jaques Villeneuve. Villenueve had received a suspended ban during the season for being involved with 3 incidents throughout the season. However at the Japanese gp 6 drivers were handed suspended bans for an incident under yellow flags, including the likes of Villenueve and Schumacher, however as Villeneuve was the only driver already carrying a suspended ban he would be forced to sit out the race. However due to a querk in the system he was able to compete in the race whilst Williams appealed the decision, but the appeal was later dropped and Villeneuve was excluded from the race.

Rewinding another 3 years to 1994 will land us with our 3 next driver bans in this list. Starting with the turn of Schumacher as he was handed a two race ban at the British GP. Now this saga could be hotly debated as there is multiple sides to this story, but schumacher had overtaken Damond Hill on the formation lap, which at the time meant he should have started at the back of the grid, however stewards at the event did not realise this rule and schumacher was instead handed a 5 second penalty during the race. And after a mess-up from Benetton not realising that this was a stop-go penalty Schumacher was black flagged(disqualified) but ignored this and completed the race. He was given a 2 race ban for the trouble.

Our second ban in the 1994 season would be given out to Mika Hakinnen, he also would be given a suspended ban after a last lap collision with Barichello and would trigger his ban at the start of the next race in Germany. He caused a start line shunt after he speared across the track as a result of him spinning. Hakinnen and Mclaren decided not to protest the ban and he would sit out the next race as a result.

Now onto the final ban in this 6 and the first ban of the 1994 season, this time earned by Eddie Irvine. He originally picked up a single race ban after caused a four car pile up in Brazil. However Jordan decided to protest the penalty causing the FIA to triple his ban, up to 3 races and warn teams against protesting bans that resulted from safety issues. This is probaly what stopped Mclaren protesting later in the season. Irvine professed his innocence but this fell on deaf ears and the Irishman would serve his 3 race ban.

Now that wraps up our 6, so thank you very much for watching, and don't forget to help us out by subscribing to get all our latest content.
