Racing Point - F1 Team History

Racing point have had a turbulent last few years with the transition from force india. They hope to fully complete the transition next year when the team rebrand as Aston Martin Racing. 2021 will be the teams 30th year in sport, and throughout that period the team has donned a multitude of different brands, names and sponsors. So lets start at the beginning.

Jordan 1991-2005

Eddie Jordan founded Jordan Racing in the early 1980s to compete in British F3, supporting drivers such as Aryton Senna and Martin Brundle. The team would jump up to the F3000 series for 1988 (the effective formula 2 series). The team took victory in its first race with Johnny Herbert and eventually took the F3000 title with future F1 race winner Jean Alesi.

Thye announced that they would form a F1 project for the 1991 season, changing the name to Jordan Grand Prix. Jordan teamed up with Ford to power the cars and signed up Andrea de Cesaris and Bertrand Gachot. The team had a very solid first season finishing 5th in the constructors. But driver Gachot was unable to complete the season as he was sent to prison for assulting a taxi driver. The team was paid by Mercedes to put their new young driver by the name of Michael Schumacher into the car for the Belgain Grand prix.

For 1992 the team struggled and only managed to score a single point in the last round of the season and for 1993 made the switch to Hart engines, signing rookie Rubens Barrichello, alongside 5 other drivers throughout that season. For 1994 Barrichello returned with Eddie Irvine and at the Pacific Grand Prix Rubens scored the teams first podium, and the solid results would continue as the team would again finish in 5th place in the constructors that year.

For 1995 the team switched to Peugeot engines and the teams results would remain similar but the team would secure their first double podium finish at the Candian grand prix, however the team would ultimately finish 6th.

The team would score a 5th place finish in both the 1996 and 1997 season as they cemented themselves within the top 5.

The team would sign 1996 world champion Damon Hill along with making the switch to Mugen Honda. The team would be struck with reliability issues throughout the majority of the season but this improved slowly towards the back end of the year, when Hill took the teams maiden victory as the chaotic Belgium GP, followed in second by his team mate Ralph Schumacher. These results would gift the team fourth in the constructors, being their best finish so far.

1999 would see Frentzen secure two victories for the team and put a solid fight towards the drivers title but came short, with the team finishing third in the constructors, this being the team's best season ever.

The 2000 season would be a nightmare for Jordan with the team slipping back to 6th in the constructors, with the team switching to factory supplied Honda engines for 2001. Unfortunately this would not improve results and the team would find their normal position of 5th in the constructors again.

Due to lowered sponsor inputs the team would begin slipping down the grid, eventually loosing their Honda deal in 2003, therefore making a return for Ford Cosworth engines. The team

would unfortunately only finish 9th in front of Minardi the team would take their final victory at a rain soaked Brazillian grand prix.

The team began to really financially struggle in 2004 and the results got worse as the team again only finished ahead to Minardi.

Midland F1 Racing

In 2005 Jordan sold the team to the Midland group for just $60 million, however the Jordan name was retained by the team for 2005. Many were skeptical about Midland’s long term plan for the team with rumours of a sale midway through the season swirling. The team would grab their final podium under the Jordan name in the controversial US GP.

The team would formerly rebrand as Midland F1 Racing for 2006 but the teams results did not improve and the team only finished ahead of Super Aguri, however the team did slowly improve over the course of the 2006 season.

Spyker F1

The team would be sold for $106 million to form Spyker F1. The teams results slacked even more with the team finishing last, scoring only one point. The team announced that it would be sold due the a split of the parent company.

Force India

The team was purchased by Vijay Mallya in mid 2007 and rebranded the team Force India for 2008. The teams increased funding would slowly improve results over the next few seasons as they slowly rose back up the contructors finishing 6th and 7th from 2010-2014.

The team would enjoy a new boost in the turbo hybrid era with a 5th placed finish in 2015, follows by a pair of fourths in 2016 and 2017. However owner Vijay Mallaya would fall into financial issues and in mid 2018 the team fell into administration.

Racing Point

The team would be saved by a Lawrence Stroll backed consortium and would rebrand the team Racing point from 2019 on wards. The team would enjoy a large financial boost from the new owners and construction would begin shortly after on a new factory for the team. The racing point brand is seen as a stepping stone for the team, as the new owners slowly rebuild the team before their 2021 rebrand as Aston Martin.
